Where a message goes
A question passes through three parties on its way to an answer.

The last row is the part Plainly does not run itself, so it is the part worth being exact about. The models Plainly uses are open-source, which means many companies host the same model. OpenRouter publishes each host's data policy. Plainly's account is set to exclude every host that trains on the prompts it receives, and OpenRouter will not send a request to one. OpenRouter's optional prompt logging is switched off on Plainly's account, so OpenRouter itself doesn't keep your prompts or the answers (OpenRouter's privacy documentation).
That setting is about training. It is not a promise that no host ever keeps anything. Some hosts keep prompts for a set period under their own retention rules, often so they can check for abuse. OpenRouter lists that period for each host.
What Plainly keeps
- Your chats, so your history works. Delete a chat and it is gone from your history. To delete your whole account, email support@withplainly.com.
- Photos you attach, stored with the chat they belong to.
- The text of documents you attach, kept with the chat. Plainly reads the text out of the file and does not store the file itself.
- A usage record with costs and timestamps for billing and abuse prevention. It contains no message content.
The website also measures visits with Google Analytics and Meta, the way most sites that advertise do. That measurement never includes what you type in a chat. The full list is on the privacy page.
How this compares with ChatGPT
ChatGPT trains on consumer chats by default. OpenAI's own pricing page shows your content used for training on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, with an opt-out in settings (chatgpt.com/pricing, October 2026). Plainly has no opt-out because there is nothing to opt out of.
The first-party apps of open-source labs are a different question again. The DeepSeek app sends your prompts to DeepSeek's own servers, and DeepSeek's hosted service keeps prompts and may train on them. That host is one of the ones Plainly's account excludes.
