What free actually gets you

The current free ChatGPT offer is "unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna" — limited messages with uploads, limited voice, limited memory, 27K of instant context. The word unlimited is doing a lot of work there. Luna is the small model. The context is small. The caps arrive exactly when a task gets interesting, and the ads arrive sooner. Free is priced at zero because serving full-capability answers costs money. The limits are how it stays free. What $20 gets you

The premium tiers are good. Frontier access, voice that works, generous limits — if you use a frontier model daily for intense work, $20 is a fair price and I would not talk you out of it. For the email, planning, quick questions and drafting that fill most days, $5 is enough.

The $5 middle

The tier the big labs do not offer. A $5 app routes every question to a capable model automatically — no model picker, no credits, no reduced demo model behind the paywall. The whole reason this is possible is that efficient open-source models got good while nobody was watching, which is the story in why Chinese AI models cost less. The option to skip: shopping for models yourself

The API route — OpenRouter and its roughly 400 models, as of August 2026 — exists and works. It is also a hobby. Comparing per-token prices, managing credits and picking a model per task is a perfectly fine way to spend an evening, and a waste of one if your goal is answers. Everyday users should not start there.

The honest limit
