Most lists here rank on raw capability, which changes every few weeks, or on headline price, which hides what the price buys. I rank on price shape and the terms attached to it:

A flat monthly price. One number, billed monthly, no per-answer meter.
No credit or token gymnastics. Credits let an app charge per question while calling itself a subscription.
Full capability for the tier. Not a cut-down demo model behind the free wall.
No ads on a tier you pay for. If you pay, ads shouldn't follow.

2. ChatGPT, free tier, $0. The best thing OpenAI gives away, and you cannot complain about free. It's the smoothest app in the market. Where it costs you: the small model, a small context that frays once a chat gets going, ads, and caps that arrive mid-task. For one question at a time it is a fair deal: a demo of the paid tiers.

3. Claude, Pro around $20 a month (~$17 annual), Max from $100. I enjoyed Claude. The answers are strong and the interface stays quiet. Where it costs you: for everyday questions, around $20 a month was more than the use justified, and I did not keep it. The premium is hard to defend when the questions are ordinary.

4. Gemini, paid plans around $15 a month. Gemini is good, with capable free use and tight integration with Google. Where it costs you: used at volume without a paid plan it gets expensive, and at around $15 a month the plans are thin value against a $5 app for everyday questions.

5. Perplexity, $20 a month for Pro. I used it briefly. Where it wins: answers that carry their sources, for questions where you want to see where a claim came from. Where it costs you: it is built for search, a narrower tool than the apps above, and citations are poor value if you want an answer, not a reading list.

Who should still pay for the frontier

If your work needs frontier answers every day, pay for them. The hardest coding, specialist research, anything where the first answer must be right: this is a different product, priced like one. ChatGPT Pro runs $100 a month. Claude Max starts at $100. Those tiers earn their price, and no cheap app substitutes.

Two things this list is not

Two limits. First, this list is mine: it reflects what I've used and what I would install. A reader who wants model choice, API access, image generation or saved projects will find every entry thin, and those readers already have a tool. Second, everyday chat is the only thing these apps are ranked on. If your work is intense, the cheap entries stop being cheap the moment you have to redo a bad answer. Price is also not the only term that matters: what an app does with your conversations counts for more than a few dollars a month.
