US college and graduate students can claim four free months of Plus, which includes ChatGPT Work, until October 31, 2026, under OpenAI's back-to-school offer. After that it renews at $20 a month, so cancel at least a day before the fifth billing date if you don't want to keep it.

ChatGPT Plus is worth $20 a month if you program, if your work pays for it, or if you use it professionally. For personal use, or a little help at work, you don't need to pay. If you want one $20 plan for lighter use, I'd take Claude's Pro plan over Plus.

I paid for Claude Pro for a long stretch, and now pay $100 a month for Claude Max 5× and still hit its limit. My ChatGPT plan is Go, which comes included with a Revolut subscription.

Who ChatGPT Plus is for

Plus earns its price for three kinds of user:

Programmers. Plus includes Codex in full, where Free and Go get a limited allowance, and it opens the larger GPT-6 models.
People whose employer or business pays for it.
Professional users who lean on deep research, ChatGPT Work, Sites or record mode. Those either start at Plus or are capped on the cheaper plans.

What ChatGPT Plus adds that matters

These are the parts of Plus that change what you can do, per OpenAI's pricing page on October 11, 2026:

The larger models. Plus adds GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, along with the GPT-5.6 family and older models. Free and Go run GPT-6 Luna, with GPT-5 Thinking Mini for reasoning.
No ads. Free and Go can show them.
Faster replies. Plus is the first plan OpenAI labels "Fast"; Free and Go are "limited by bandwidth and availability".
Deep research and Codex in full, where Free and Go get a limited allowance.
Sites, interactive tables and charts, apps for internal tools, developer mode, record mode, and ChatGPT Work on web and mobile. None of these are on Free or Go.
Expanded memory across chats.

What Plus leaves the same

Plus buys no extra context. Its windows match Go's: 54K tokens on the default Instant model, about 40 pages by OpenAI's estimate, and 256K on reasoning models, about 320 pages. Only Pro goes higher, at 128K and 400K. If your complaint about ChatGPT is long chats losing their beginning, switching to Thinking on Go gets you the same 256K window for $8.

OpenAI can also train on your chats by default on Plus, as on every consumer plan, with an opt-out in settings.

The heavier features still have allowances. Deep research is "Yes" on Plus and "Maximum" on Pro, and the pricing page doesn't say how many reports either gets. Everyday text chat is unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails.

For light use, my pick at $20 is Claude. On my ladder, someone who uses AI a little and wants to pay for one frontier plan should take the $20 Claude plan, and ChatGPT Plus specifically is the one I'd tell them to skip.

Claude Pro's weak point is usage. On Pro, I always ran out, and so did friends on the same plan. Around January 2026 I moved to Max 5× at $100 a month. The way the limits work is set out in Claude Pro usage limits.

Plus wins on volume. OpenAI lists everyday text chat on Plus as unlimited, while Claude Pro meters you every five hours and again every week. If you chat with an AI all day for work, Plus will stop you less often. Plus also includes image generation.

If $20 is more than you need

If you use AI a little, my answer is to pay nothing or take the $20 Claude plan. For heavier use there are cheaper and bigger options than Plus.

The free ChatGPT plan is good. It runs GPT-6 Luna with unlimited text chats, and it shows ads unless you switch to its ad-free mode with lower limits.
ChatGPT Go at $8 adds more image generation and memory, plus scheduled tasks, and keeps Free's models and the ads. I think it's a bad tier: you pay and still get the ads and the smaller models.
For heavy everyday asking (questions, emails, plans), Plainly is $5 a month with unlimited chat, no ads, and long chats that keep working. Plainly runs one capable open-source model and switches when a better one comes out. You never pick. I built it, so weigh that accordingly.
