Is Plainly right for me?

Plainly is right for you if you want one simple place to ask AI questions and get clear answers for $5 a month. It searches the web, reads your documents and photos, and keeps long chats working. Skip it if you need an API, a model picker, image generation or memory across chats.

Who Plainly is for

I built Plainly for the person who just needs an app to ask questions to. You open it in a browser, sign in with Google, type what you want help with and read the answer. There's no model to choose and no setup before the first question.

The people it suits use AI for ordinary, useful jobs:

• writing and fixing emails, messages and letters
• planning a trip, a week of meals, a budget or a move
• explaining a bill, a contract clause or a school assignment in everyday words
• a second opinion on a decision or a draft
• pulling the main points out of a long PDF or Word document
• checking something current, like a product, a rule change or the news, with links to the pages it used

What Plainly can do

• Answer questions, write, plan, explain and give second opinions, in one chat window.
• Search the web when a question needs current information, and link the sources it used so you can check them.
• Read documents you attach: PDF, Word (.docx), CSV, Markdown and plain text. It reads the text and doesn't keep the file.
• Read photos, up to 4 per message: a screenshot, a product label, a handwritten note, a chart.
• Keep long chats working. When a conversation runs very long, older parts are summarized so the chat keeps its thread.
• Save your chats and sync them across devices. Start on a laptop and pick the same chat up on your phone's browser.
• Run in any browser, with nothing to download. Sign-in is with a Google account only, so there's no password to create.

It costs $5 a month for unlimited chat. A new account can ask a limited amount free each month, so you can test it on your own questions first, and you can cancel any time in settings.

Who should skip Plainly

Plainly is the wrong app for highly technical users and for anyone who needs one of the features below. The team left each of them out on purpose, and in every case another app does the job well.

How does Plainly choose a model?

Plainly runs one capable open-source model and switches when a better one comes out. You never pick.

The team watches new open-source releases and makes the switch. Every chat runs on the same model, including chats with photos and documents, and the app never shows a model name. The trade is that you can't reach past that model for a stronger one when a question is hard. For the hardest coding, specialist research, or work where the first answer has to be the best available, a frontier plan earns its price.

What the team chose to leave out

Plainly is built around one rule: nothing in it should need explaining, even to someone who has never used AI. Anything that fails that test stays out.

That rules out a model picker, because choosing between models asks you to know which one suits which job, the very thing most people came to avoid. It rules out settings sprawl: there's no panel of options to work through before your first question. And it rules out prompt tricks. There's no template library or special syntax to learn, so you ask the way you'd ask a person.

Memory across chats, projects and image generation fail the same test. Each one needs a page of explanation (what the app remembers about you, where a project's files live) before you can use it with confidence. Leaving them out keeps the app quick to learn, and it means the app holds no profile of you between chats.

Because Plainly doesn't remember your preferences from one chat to the next, a very specific request needs its context in the message, such as who you're writing to and the tone you want.

Plainly, a $20 plan or a $100 plan?

My rule of thumb for how much to pay: if you use AI a little, the $20 Claude plan; if you use it a lot, the $5 Plainly plan; if you use it a huge amount, the $100 Claude or ChatGPT plan. A $20 frontier plan works well for light users because they never reach its usage limit. Heavy users do. ChatGPT Go at $8 is, to me, a bad tier: it still shows ads, it runs smaller models than Plus, and its default Instant model holds only about 40 pages of a conversation.

I'm in the last row myself. I pay for Claude Max 5× at $100 a month, and I still hit its limit. For ChatGPT Plus specifically, it's worth paying if you program, if your work pays for it, or if you use AI professionally. Otherwise you don't need it. Privacy and support
