How to cancel ChatGPT Plus

On the web, open ChatGPT's Settings, choose Billing, and cancel your plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions instead. Do it at least 24 hours before renewal; Plus stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.

Cancelling keeps your account and your chats. You move to the free plan when the paid period ends, and you can subscribe again whenever you like. The steps below were checked against OpenAI's, Apple's and Google's help pages in October 2026.

First, find where you subscribed

Cancel in the place that bills you. A subscription that Apple or Google bills can only be cancelled in that store, per OpenAI's help center.

You subscribed Cancel in
On chatgpt.com in a browser ChatGPT Settings, then Billing
In the ChatGPT app on iPhone or iPad iPhone Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions
In the ChatGPT app on Android Google Play, then Subscriptions
Through a ChatGPT Business workspace The workspace owner's billing settings

If you can't remember, check the receipt email or your card statement. A charge from Apple or Google means the store bills you. If you subscribed in more than one place, each one bills you separately, so cancel all but one.

Cancel ChatGPT Plus on the web

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com in a browser.
  2. Click your profile icon and open Settings.
  3. Choose Billing.
  4. Next to Cancel plan, choose Cancel.
  5. Confirm the cancellation.

Plus stays active until the end of your current billing period. The same steps cancel ChatGPT Go and every Pro tier.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad (App Store subscription)

These are Apple's steps, from its support page on cancelling subscriptions.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap ChatGPT.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down to see it.

If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration date in red, the subscription is already cancelled. Deleting the ChatGPT app or your OpenAI account leaves an Apple subscription running, so cancel here first.

Cancel on Android (Google Play subscription)

  1. Open the Google Play Store app, signed in to the Google account that paid for ChatGPT.
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select ChatGPT.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

On a computer, the same list is at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Google's help page states that uninstalling an app doesn't cancel its subscription, and that you keep access for the time you've already paid for.

Cancel ChatGPT Business (formerly Team)

Only the workspace owner can cancel a Business workspace. The owner opens Workspace settings, then Billing, then Manage plan, and chooses Cancel subscription. If you're a member, ask the owner. Enterprise and Edu workspaces are run by your organization's admin, who deals with OpenAI directly.

If you're on the free student months

The same steps apply to the 2026 student offer of four free months of Plus. Timing matters more here: if you cancel during the first three free months, Plus runs to the end of that month and the free months you had left are forfeited (OpenAI Help Center). To keep all four, cancel during the fourth month, at least 24 hours before the first $20 charge. The offer's terms are in ChatGPT student discount.

Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal

OpenAI's cancellation article asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Apple gives the same 24-hour advice for free trials. Cancel close to the renewal and that month's charge can still go through, and cancelling afterwards won't refund it.

Your renewal date shows in ChatGPT under Settings, then Billing, and in the Apple or Google Play subscription screen. You can cancel on the first day of a billing month and still use Plus to the end of it, so there's nothing to gain by waiting.

What happens after you cancel

You keep Plus until the end of the period you've paid for. Then the account moves to ChatGPT Free. Your chats stay until you delete them.

Two more things to know. Your data controls stay as you set them: every consumer plan, Free included, may use your chats for training unless you opt out in Settings, and cancelling changes nothing there. And if you've built custom GPTs, OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on all ChatGPT plans on December 11, 2026 and moving them to plugins; its help center has a "Custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ," so plan for that date whatever plan you're on.

Refunds after cancelling

Cancelling stops the next charge. It doesn't refund the month you're in. OpenAI's refund article says payments are generally non-refundable, with exceptions for billing errors, unauthorized charges and places where local consumer law requires a refund.

For a subscription bought on the web, request a refund through the chat in OpenAI's help center (help.openai.com). For an App Store purchase, Apple handles it at reportaproblem.apple.com. For Google Play, Google's help page says contacting the app's developer is often the quickest route, so start with OpenAI's help center chat.

Downgrade to ChatGPT Go instead

Go costs $8 a month in the US. It runs the same models as Free with a longer default conversation (about 40 pages instead of 12), more memory, scheduled tasks and a 256K-token Thinking mode, and it may show ads. To move from Plus to Go, you can cancel Plus, let the paid period end, then choose Go when you upgrade again.

I have Go, included with my Revolut subscription, and I'd call it a bad tier: it can show ads, it runs the smaller model, and on its default Instant model a chat has lost things I told it earlier in the same conversation. If Free covers your use, Free is the better step down. The comparison is in is ChatGPT Go worth it.

Export your data before you go

You don't have to export before cancelling, since your chats stay on the free plan. If you plan to delete the account later, or want your own copy, here are the steps:

  1. Open Settings, then Data controls.
  2. Next to Export data, choose Export, then Confirm export.
  3. Wait for the email from OpenAI. OpenAI's support team says it can take a few days to arrive (OpenAI community forum, April 2026).
  4. Download the ZIP file within 24 hours of the email arriving, while signed in to the same account.

The ZIP holds your whole history, which makes it hard to search. Copy the few chats you reread into a document of your own.

If you're leaving ChatGPT

If you want to keep using AI for less, Free may be enough, and the best cheap ChatGPT alternatives compares the paid options. Claude Pro costs $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and has no ads. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and keeps you on Google's models. Plainly, which I built, is $5 a month for unlimited chat with web search and linked sources; it has no image generation, voice mode or memory across chats. What carries over when you move apps, and what doesn't, is in switching from ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund for ChatGPT Plus?+

Usually not. OpenAI's refund article says payments are generally non-refundable, so cancelling stops the next charge without refunding the current month. Exceptions include billing errors and places where local consumer law requires a refund; Apple purchases are refunded through Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com.

How do I cancel ChatGPT Go or ChatGPT Pro?+

The same way as Plus. On the web, open Settings, then Billing, and cancel the plan; if you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in the App Store or Google Play. Go costs $8 a month and Pro starts at $100 in the US.

Does deleting the ChatGPT app cancel my subscription?+

No. Uninstalling the app cancels nothing, and Google says so directly for Play subscriptions. Deleting your OpenAI account cancels a subscription billed by OpenAI, but a subscription billed by Apple keeps charging until you cancel it in your iPhone settings.

What happens to my chats if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?+

They stay. Your account moves to the free plan at the end of the billing period, and your conversations remain until you delete them. Custom instructions and projects carry over too, with lower limits on Free.

How long does a ChatGPT data export take?+

OpenAI emails a download link when the export is ready. OpenAI's support team says it can take a few days to arrive, and the link stays active for only 24 hours, so download the ZIP file promptly.
