Is there a ChatGPT student discount?

Yes, and it's worth claiming. OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, worth about $80 at the standard $20 a month. It must be claimed by 31 October 2026, and it renews at $20 a month afterwards unless you cancel.

The offer is real. The trap isn't the offer. It's month five.

What the offer actually is

Eligibility is current full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible US degree-granting institutions. If you claimed an earlier student promotion, that doesn't disqualify you. You can claim this one if you still meet the requirements.

One thing worth separating, because the two get muddled constantly: OpenAI has also run a separate student credit grant for Codex usage, reported as $100 in credits. That is a different offer from the Plus months, and it doesn't pay your Plus subscription or upgrade a free account. If you're reading a summary that says ChatGPT is free for students, check which of the two offers it's describing.

What happens when the free months end

Four free months is a trial with a billing date attached, and the arithmetic is worth doing before you claim.

You get $80 of value. For four months, you have the frontier model, no ads and the higher ceilings, the best ChatGPT experience on the ladder. Then the free periods end, the card on file is charged $20, and you have to make the call in month five, when you're already busy.

Here's the part nobody puts in the offer email. The plan you would be paying $20 for keeps the same 54,000-token context window as the $8 tier. Plus buys the better model, removes ads and raises ceilings; it doesn't lengthen the conversation. If the thing that frustrates you is a chat going fuzzy halfway through an essay or a revision session, upgrading from the $8 tier to Plus doesn't fix it. Only the $100 tier moves the window, to 128,000 tokens.

How to claim it, in order

1. Sign in to the ChatGPT account you want the offer applied to. It doesn't transfer between accounts later.
2. Verify your enrollment through SheerID. A school email address usually works; if not, you can submit enrollment documents for review.
3. Add a payment method. It's required to activate, and you shouldn't be charged during the four free periods.
4. Claim before 31 October 2026. The four free periods begin on the claim date, so claiming later doesn't extend anything. It just moves your billing date.
5. Put the month-five date in your calendar now, with a note to decide, not just to cancel.

Cancelling without wasting the free months

If you cancel, your Plus access runs to the end of the current billing period, and any remaining promotional months are forfeited.

Cancel on the last day of the fourth period, not the first. Cancelling early to "be safe" throws away free months you have already earned. This is the one piece of admin worth getting exactly right.

Is Plus worth paying for as a student?

Sometimes, and it depends on the shape of your work rather than your field.

Worth it if you're running long research sessions, working through documents in one sitting, or producing writing that has to be right the first time. That is work the frontier model does measurably better.

Not worth it if your use is essays, problem sets and questions between classes. Those tasks are short, they don't reach the frontier, and they don't fill the context window, which means both the model difference and the memory difference are invisible to you. A student in that position is paying $240 a year for capability their week never uses.

There is a middle option nobody advertises, and it fits coursework best. A cheap ChatGPT alternative at a flat $5 a month covers unlimited everyday chat and doesn't meter your asking. Before you count on the promotion

Three things to hold against the above.

The offer is a promotion, and promotions change. OpenAI has run different student offers in consecutive years, this one is more generous than last year's, and eligibility has shifted with them. Country eligibility has been narrow and inconsistent. Check the help page on the day you claim rather than trusting a summary, including this one.
