ChatGPT Plus vs Pro

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month. Pro costs $100, $200 or $500 a month. Pro adds Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra, several times Plus's usage, longer context windows, unlimited image creation and an always-on agent OpenAI calls a dot. Plus suits most paying users; Pro suits people who keep running out of Plus.

What Pro adds over Plus

A stronger reasoning mode

Pro reasoning is the clearest model difference. It is a setting that spends longer on a problem before answering, and it runs on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model. When GPT-6 Sol became the default chat model for paid plans on October 7, 2026, OpenAI's release notes said the Pro reasoning option would continue to use GPT-6 Astra. Pro also lists GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Plus lists GPT-6 Astra among its models, but it has no Pro reasoning setting.

Who notices the difference depends on the work. Hard math, code and long analysis are where extra thinking time can change the answer. A cover letter or a dinner plan gets a good answer from Plus's default model already.

Several times the usage

Pro is sold on volume. Until late September 2026, OpenAI listed Pro 100 at 5 times Plus's usage and Pro 200 at 20 times. It now describes the tiers relative to each other, and the tier section below has the current figures. Pro plans also have no five-hour usage window, a line OpenAI's Codex pricing page states directly ("Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit"). Weekly allowances still apply.

Longer context

The context window is how much of a conversation or document the model can hold at once. On the default Instant model, Plus holds 54K tokens and Pro holds 128K. On reasoning models, Plus holds 256K and Pro holds 400K. A Plus user who switches to a thinking model already gets 256K, so the jump to Pro matters mostly for very long documents or large codebases held in one chat. The extras

Pro includes dots, OpenAI's always-on agents, which run on GPT-6 Astra in the cloud with their own computer and browser. OpenAI's dots documentation limits them on Pro to users over 18 outside the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, and says they are rolling out gradually. Pro also lists unlimited, faster image creation, maximum deep research and expanded Codex.

ChatGPT Pro price: the three tiers compared

Pro 200 is the original Pro plan, launched at $200 in December 2024. OpenAI paused new sign-ups on September 10, 2026 (reported) and reopened them on September 29 with a change its help article states directly: new Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower usage allowance than before. Anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and September 29 keeps the previous allowance through October 29, 2026. The help article gives no new figure. OpenAI's email to existing subscribers, posted publicly and quoted by pricing trackers, puts the change at 20 times Plus's usage down to 10 times in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and the GPT-6 Pro chat limit down from 200 messages a week to 100, starting October 30.

Ultrafast is the one feature that separates Pro 500. It works with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and ChatGPT Work, and OpenAI says it generates GPT-6 Astra tokens up to 8 times faster than standard mode. It also draws your included usage at 8 times the standard rate, so the allowance runs out faster when you use it. OpenAI says other self-serve plans can't get it, even with purchased credits (OpenAI's Codex speed documentation, October 2026).

Divide each price by its usage multiple and every tier comes to about $20 per Plus-sized allowance, the same rate as Plus itself. A bigger tier buys more volume, and on Pro 500 more speed, at the same unit price. People expecting a bulk discount at $200 or $500 will find none on the new terms.

What $100 of AI buys a very heavy user

The plan I pay for at this price is Anthropic's Claude Max 5x, at $100 a month, sold on the same idea as Pro 100: five times the usage of the company's $20 plan. Before that I was on Claude Pro for a long time, and I always ran out, as did friends on the same plan. I moved to Max around January 2026.

I use AI very heavily, and I still hit the Max limit. Five times a $20 plan is a lot of room, and a very heavy month can still reach the end of it. My view of the $100 tier is that it buys a great amount of usage, enough for everything except the most demanding programming, and that it is a lot of money.

Pro 200 and Pro 500 exist for the user who outgrows that. My rule of thumb across providers: use AI a little, and the $20 Claude plan is enough; use it a lot, and Plainly at $5 covers it; use it a huge amount, and the $100 Claude or ChatGPT plan is the one to buy. ChatGPT Business vs Plus

ChatGPT Business is ChatGPT for a team, and it was called Team until August 2025. A standard seat costs $25 per user a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually, with a two-seat minimum. Per person it costs about the same as Plus. It adds workspace controls and a different default on training, which matter to a company and rarely to one person.

For a small business, the training default is usually the deciding row. Plus trains on your chats unless you switch it off in settings; Business keeps business data out of training by default, and an admin controls who has access. For a single person, two seats at $40 a month buys controls nobody else will use.

ChatGPT Pro vs Business

Pro is one person buying the most capacity. A Business premium seat is a team's heavy user. On annual billing a premium seat costs $100 a month, the same as Pro 100.

Pro 100 gives one person Pro reasoning, dots, the 128K and 400K context windows and a path up to Ultrafast. A premium seat gives a reported 5 times a standard seat's usage inside a managed workspace, with training off by default and SSO. Two premium seats on annual billing cost $200 a month, the same as one Pro 200.

A solo heavy user fits Pro. A small company with one or two heavy users fits Business, with premium seats for those people and standard seats for everyone else.

Should you pay for Pro?

Pay for Pro if Plus keeps running out on you and the work pays for it: daily programming, professional research, long documents you work through in one sitting. Start at Pro 100. Move up only if that runs out too, since every tier costs the same per unit of usage.

Stay on Plus if it covers your month. For ChatGPT Plus itself, my view is that paying makes sense if you program, if your work pays for it, or if you use it professionally; whether ChatGPT Plus is worth it covers that decision.

Pay for neither if your use is everyday questions, writing and planning. The free tier handles a lot of that, and free vs $5 vs $20 AI apps sets out the cheaper options. Plainly is $5 a month for unlimited chat. Plainly runs one capable open-source model and switches when a better one comes out. You never pick. It does no image generation, coding agents or deep research, so it replaces none of the work Pro is built for.
